Time of Use (TOU)
Did you know that NineStar Connect has an optional program which might save you money on your electric bill depending on the time of day of your electric use? The Time of Use (TOU) program monitors when your electric usage occurs and then applies different rates based on whether the use occurs during on-peak or off-peak hours. On-peak hours run from 4 pm to 8 pm on weekdays (excluding designated holidays), and, as the name suggests, those are the hours that many residential customers are using more electricity.
If you don’t tend to consume much electricity during those hours, then this program may save you some money in comparison to traditional billing, which charges a uniform rate regardless of the time of day when electricity is used. Q: What are the on-peak times?
A: On-peak times are weekdays 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (excluding designated holidays).
Q: What about holidays and weekends?
A: The on-peak rates do not apply to holidays and weekends. All electricity used on these days is charged at the lower off-peak rate.
Q: What is the price difference between on-peak and off-peak?
A: The on-peak electric rate is 32 cents per kilowatthour and the off-peak rate is 6.9 cents per kilowatthour. The flat rate is currently 10.5 cents per kilowatthour.
Q: How can I benefit from TOU rates?
A: By shifting your use of electricity to off-peak times and avoiding using power during the on-peak times, you could reduce what you pay for electricity by as much as 10 to 30 percent.
Q: Is there a possibility that my bill will go up with TOU rates?
A: Yes, it is possible that your bill might increase with TOU rates. This will depend on the amount of electricity that you currently use in the on-peak window and how much of that electrical usage can be moved outside the on-peak window. Whether or not you will be able to save money with the TOU rate depends primarily on you.
Q: Will I need a new meter?
A: NineStar is in the process of installing new Tantalus AMI meters at all service locations. These meters make the implementation of TOU rates possible. They also make it possible for NineStar members to monitor and track their use of electricity.
Q: Can I still use appliances and equipment whenever I want?
A: Yes, you are free to use electricity at any time. However, your usage during on-peak hours will be charged at a rate that is higher than the standard rates.
Q: What if I’m not saving money with TOU rates?
A: Being on the TOU rate is strictly optional. Taking part in the TOU program is your decision, and if you decide to try the TOU rate and find that it is not saving you money or for any reason would like to switch back to the standard flat rate, you may do so without penalty. However, if you wish to re-enter the TOU program after switching back to the standard flat rate, you must wait at least 12 months before re-enrolling.
